Valeda light therapy for dry macular degeneration in Seguin
For years, people with dry macular degeneration were told to take vitamins and wait. Valeda is the first FDA-authorized treatment for dry AMD patients with vision loss.
In November 2024, the FDA authorized the Valeda Light Delivery System for treating dry age-related macular degeneration (AMD), making it the first device authorized for dry AMD patients with vision loss.
Valeda in Seguin
Seguin is one of only two Eye Associates of South Texas offices offering Valeda, along with North Central San Antonio. Dr. J.T. Kavanagh is already treating patients at 908 E Court St.
A Valeda series means nine visits in a few weeks, so having it in Seguin saves Guadalupe County patients, and those from New Braunfels, La Vernia and Gonzales, many trips to San Antonio.
How it works
Valeda uses gentle, low-level light at several wavelengths, a process called photobiomodulation. The light is absorbed by cells in the retina and is thought to support their energy production and health. Nothing touches your eye, and there is no heat, no injection and no pain.
What treatment involves
You sit at the device and look into it while it delivers light, with both eyes treated at the same visit in under 10 minutes. A treatment series is 9 sessions over 3 to 5 weeks, typically repeated about every 4 months.
Who may be a candidate
Valeda is for early to intermediate dry AMD. It is not a treatment for wet AMD, which is treated with injections. Dr. Kavanagh will examine your eyes and review OCT imaging to see whether you are likely to benefit.
Cost and insurance
Valeda is usually covered by medical insurance. Office staff will check your benefits before you start treatment.

Common questions
Does Valeda hurt?
No. Patients see bright, colored light and feel nothing else.
Will it restore my vision?
Results vary. In the LIGHTSITE III trial, treated patients gained more than 5 letters on the eye chart, about one line, over 24 months.
Do I still take AREDS vitamins?
Keep following your doctor's advice on vitamins. Valeda is used alongside them, not instead of them.
